Recent archeological digs 30 kms from Bacalar indicate the presence of a pyramid which is bigger than the one at Palenque. The site has been named Xcabal, after a mayan godess. It it thought that there are several other areas of interest opening to the public in the next couple of years, since this area was one of the most important mayan settlements in the mayan preclassic.
